There is very little benefit to using silent gear, especially on a pickaxe. You can get max speed on an ATM pickaxe w/ enchants and apotheosis, easily enough. Once you get access to better materials and the later machines for abilities like grading, silent gear gets a bit more relevant again and actually stands its ground. You have to use the silent gear alloy machine to form the allow ingots. The configuration disables the ability to mix materials when crafting the item/tool, but you can mix materials in the alloy machine to create a handful of alloy ingots, giving you the mixes stats and bonuses.
